Project ChildSafe Comes To Waushara County:
1500 Firearm Safety Kits to be Distributed
Locally
The Waushara County Sheriff’s Department will provide
1500 free firearm safety kits to local residents through a partnership with
Project ChildSafe, the nationwide firearms safety education program.
The safety kits, which include a gun lock, will be distributed on week
days during the months of October and November from 7:30 am until 5:00 pm at the
Sheriff’s Department in Wautoma, They
will also be available on Saturdays at the Poy Sippi Fire Department from 10:00
to 11:00 am and the Hancock Fire Department from 1:00 to 2:00 pm.
Project ChildSafe, a program developed by the National
Shooting Sports Foundation, will distribute millions of firearm safety kits
throughout the country over the next year.
The program is funded by a U.S. Department of Justice grant, with
additional funding provided by the firearms industry.
“We encourage residents to pick up a Project ChildSafe
safety kit so that they can securely store their firearm,” said Sheriff David
Peterson. “Each kit contains a
safety curriculum and a cable-style gun lock.
The locks fit most types of handguns, rifles and shotguns.
The goal is to prevent a child or any other unauthorized person from
accessing a firearm in your home.”
By partnering with Project ChildSafe, Waushara County
Sheriff’s Department is participating in a growing national effort to promote
firearms safety education to all gun owners.
Project ChildSafe will distribute gun lock safety kits to all 50 states
and the five U.S. territories.
“We are pleased to have the Waushara County Sheriff’s
Department as a Project ChildSafe partner,” said Dee Dee Dockins, spokesperson
for the program. “Project
ChildSafe is an important step forward in helping ensure that all firearm owners
fully understand their responsibilities with respect to the safe handling and
storage of firearms.”

Tips
for Avoiding Deer Collision
- Be
vigilant near dawn and dusk, the most active time for deer.
- Heed
deer crossing and speed limit signs.
- Always
wear your safety belt, it reduces your chance of being injured if you hit a
deer.
- If
you see a deer by the side of the road, slow down and blow your horn with
one long blast to frighten it away.
- When
you see one deer, look for another, they seldom run alone.
- If
a deer looms in your headlights, don’t expect it to move away.
Headlights can confuse a deer and cause it to freeze.
- Brake
firmly when you see a deer in or near your path.
- Do
not swerve. It can confuse the
deer, and it can cause you to lose control and hit a tree or another
vehicle.
- If
you hit a deer, stay in your vehicle. Do
not get out and touch the animal. An
injured deer can hurt you or itself.
- Walking
or stopping on the highway is dangerous-you could get hit by an oncoming
vehicle.
- Get
your car off the road if possible and call law enforcement.
