NOTICE

TO ALL DOG OWNERS

OF WAUSHARA COUNTY

Pursuant to Sec. 174.052, Wisconsin Statutes, notice is hereby given to all Waushara County dog owners that rabies vaccinations and dog licenses are required under the statutes.

RABIES VACCINATIONS

Within 30 days after a dog reaches 4 months of age, an initial rabies vaccination is required under Sec. 95.21(2), Wis. Stats. The dog must be revaccinated within 1 year of the initial vaccination. Thereafter, the dog shall be revaccinated against rabies before the day that the immunization expires as stated on the certificate of vaccination or, if no date is specified, within 3 years after the previous vaccination. Vaccinations must be administered by a licensed veterinarian.

If the owner obtains a dog or brings a dog into this state after the dog has reached 4 months of age, the owner shall have the dog vaccinated against rabies within 30 days after the dog is obtained or brought into the state, unless the dog has already been vaccinated as evidenced by a current certificate of rabies vaccination from this state or another state.

DOG LICENSING

ALL dogs 5 months of age or older require a license, per Sec. 174.05(1), Wis. Stats. The license year is based on a calendar year. Proof of current immunization against rabies must be presented at the time the license is requested. If you cannot find your dog’s rabies vaccination certificate, a duplicate copy must be obtained from your veterinarian.

License fees are $10 for unneutered or unspayed dogs, and $5 for neutered or spayed dogs. In Waushara County, those wishing to keep more than 5 adult dogs on their property must apply for and obtain a kennel license. (If you live within city or village limits, check with your municipal clerk to see if different limits apply.) A multiple dog/kennel license is $35 for the first 12 dogs, and $3 for each dog after 12 dogs. Kennel licenses are issued only after an owner has obtained approval from the County’s Zoning, Health and Sheriff’s departments.

As the authorized collecting official for the County’s municipalities, the County Clerk’s Office sells dog licenses to County citizens who do not pay for their dog licenses with their municipality/municipal treasurer in December and/or January.

PENALTIES

After March 31, a late fee of $5 per dog shall be assessed to the owner obtaining a dog license for any dogs older than 5 months of age (Sec. 174.05(5), Wis. Stats.). Owners not licensing their dogs may also be subject to County and/or municipal citations. In addition, an owner who fails to have a dog vaccinated against rabies as required by statute may be required to forfeit not less than $50 nor more than $100, plus court costs.
